AWARE is working on plans for an environmental education center that will provide the metropolitan Atlanta area with a fascinating look into the natural wonders that surround us. The center will have a select few non-releasable native animals that will be our ambassadors of education. Visitors will be able to learn the language of the animals around us through close encounters with these wild ambassadors. Our animal care facility will enable us to provide the finest care available for injured, sick and orphaned wildlife. We will have a veterinary technician on staff and qualified wildlife veterinarians available to us 24 hours a day. We have designed state of the art enclosures based on years of experience and adaptations used in the finest facilities around the country. These enclosures will incorporate the natural environments of the species being housed. Enclosures will be designed to allow for non-invasive public viewing of patients and the rehabilitation techniques being applied. 2008 Update In the last year we have built a number of education exhibit enclosures at the center. - We have completed enclosures for our red-tailed hawk exhibit, eagle exhibit, bobcat exhibit, and tree squirrel exhibit.
- We have also built several rehabilitation enclosures for bobcats, fox, squirrel, opossum, and small to medium birds.
- We have almost finished running underground water lines to the rehabilitation area. The electrical is already done.
- One of the ponds has been relined and rebuilt and the other is under reconstruction.
- The fence for the front exhibits has been completed and looks great and the fence around the rehabilitation area is progressing.
All in all we have made great strides in the last year and all of this work is made possible because of each and every volunteer. Whether you worked on any of these individual projects or helped in some other capacity, you have made it possible for AWARE to move forward in its mission. Don’t forget that we have Hands on Day every Sunday from 10:30 am until dark. Everyone is welcome to come out and help with building and other projects at the center. We also need skilled craftsmen to do plumbing, carpentry, electrical, landscaping, etc. If you or any of your friends can offer a few hours to help, we would love to see you on Sundays. Thanks, Michael
